Welcome to the web site of
Linda Kaullen Perkins
Ahhh summertime—my favorite season! I think it started way back in grade school when I equated those hot, glorious days with freedom. Later when I became a teacher, I still had school responsibilities, but I definitely had less stress during June, July, and August. Now, on most summer afternoons, when I stretch out in a lounge chair to study the trees and clouds, I wonder if Heaven can be any better than this
Butterflies
are
flitting from the hyssop to the zinnias. Hummingbirds flock to the three feeders
in my backyard. A Bobwhite calls from the edge of the field. Mama woodpeckers
are teaching their babies to eat sunflower seeds at nearby feeders and I glimpse
flashes of yellow finches darting to the thistle seed.
Plants are vibrant from frequent showers. Queen Anne's Lace, chicory, and daisies bloom profusely along the country roadways, as beautiful as any well-planned garden. The grass has to be mowed often, but it is rare to have such a green lawn this late in the season.
I've canned green beans and pizza sauce and have been freezing green peppers. There are still tomatoes to preserve and pickles and relishes to make. When my hands are busy, I listen to audio books. But, no matter how much I work around the farm, I find time to read and scribble a few words. I'm still working on short stories but have been doing historical research for a bigger project.
Enjoy the rest of the summer. Get outdoors and see what's going on in your backyard.
